Ric Stern
Ric Stern is a cycling coach and sports scientist specialising in power-based training and performance analysis.
His background spans exercise physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and sociology, informing a long-standing applied approach to athlete development and performance modelling.
Ric developed early ramp-test–based models for estimating sustainable threshold power from maximal aerobic power (MAP), work that later informed widely adopted MAP-to-FTP conversion approaches used by modern training platforms.
He has coached athletes for over 25 years across road, track, time trial, gravel, mountain bike, and ultra-endurance disciplines, working with riders from first-time cyclists to World Champions and Paralympic medallists.
He is the founder of CycleCoach and continues to work directly with athletes and coaches worldwide.
Ric has written extensively on performance modelling, including detailed reference articles on Maximal Aerobic Power (MAP), Functional Threshold Power (FTP), and ramp testing.
