Workout of the Month - Race Simulation

This month’s workout of the month is the aptly named race simulation and is a session I do every so often. The session should be geared towards the type of racing that you do, or the type that is your main race (if you do multiple types of racing).

The simulation doesn’t need to be the exact same format/distance as your race, but it’s best if you do it on the bike that you’ll be using for that race with the equipment you’ll be using. So, if your main race is say criteriums then having a smash out on your TT bike is the wrong thing to do. Use your criterium bike, and maybe even try to replicate a criterium style circuit, with a group of riders. On the other hand, if you race ultra endurance events, then a long ride, laden with some/all of your bags with food, and overnight supplies would be the way forward.

This way you can get an idea of how your race event may unfold, what could go wrong, and how you’re physically feeling. It can be useful to discover aspects that are outside your fitness. Recently, I did a feisty group ride (simulating a road race), but one issue that I had was related to grip strength in the cold. I suffer with Reynaud’s (please weather warm up) and I found group riding at speed with freezing cold hands rather unnerving. I made a mental note to wait until my hands are less cold!
